Best Away and Third Kits 2026/27: Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern, Dortmund and More

Last updated: August 2026

For most of football history the away kit was an afterthought — a plain white or yellow shirt that existed only to solve a colour clash. That is no longer true. Across the 2026/27 season, the second and third kits are where the interesting design work is happening, and increasingly where the sales are too.

This is a ranked look at the standout away and third kits of 2026/27, club by club. If you want the full release list instead, see our 2026/27 kit release guide.

Why away kits matter more than they used to

Three shifts explain it.

The home shirt has no design freedom. Barcelona wear blaugrana. Liverpool wear red. Supporters revolt when a manufacturer experiments with the primary kit, so manufacturers stopped experimenting there. The away and third shirts are the only place left to try something.

Away shirts work better as clothing. A neutral or unusual colourway is easier to wear outside a stadium than a saturated club-colour shirt. As football shirts moved into everyday wardrobes, the alternates became the shirts people actually reach for.

Scarcity. Clubs produce away and third kits in smaller runs than home kits. Popular ones disappear and rarely come back.

The standout away and third kits of 2026/27

1. Barcelona — the purple alternate

The most searched club alternate of the season, and by a wide margin. Barcelona's move into a violet-purple palette is a genuine break from anything the club has worn recently, and it has travelled far beyond Catalonia — the demand shows up strongest in India, Nigeria and Indonesia rather than Spain. If you have been searching "Barcelona purple kit" or "Barcelona violet jersey", this is the shirt. See Barcelona shirts →

2. Chelsea — the 2026/27 away shirt

Chelsea's away kit generates more search volume in West Africa than almost any other club shirt in the world, and this season's version has continued that. Chelsea's away designs have been consistently bolder than their home kits for several cycles now, and 2026/27 is no exception. See Chelsea shirts →

3. Borussia Dortmund — the alternate

Dortmund face a specific problem: their home yellow is so distinctive that any away kit looks conservative next to it. The 2026/27 alternate leans into that instead of fighting it, and the result is one of the more wearable shirts in the Bundesliga. Strong demand out of Mexico and Latin America. See Dortmund shirts →

4. Bayern Munich — away and fourth kits

Bayern have gone conservative on home, away and third this season, keeping the experimentation for their special-edition fourth shirt. That makes the away kit a safe, clean buy and the fourth kit the collector's item. See Bayern shirts →

5. AC Milan and Inter — the Milan alternates

Both Milan clubs have leaned into fashion partnerships and limited drops in recent seasons, which is why their alternates trade above retail more often than most. Serie A shirts are also cut noticeably slimmer than Premier League equivalents — worth remembering when you pick a size. AC Milan → · Inter →

6. Real Madrid — the third kit

Real Madrid's home shirt is the highest-volume single jersey in club football and always will be. But the third kit is where the design team is allowed to move, and it is consistently among the best-selling alternates worldwide. See Real Madrid shirts →

7. The rest worth watching

Arsenal's alternate continues a strong recent run of away designs. Manchester United's away shirt outsells the home shirt in several Asian markets. Juventus keep producing third kits that look nothing like Juventus, which is exactly why they sell. Liverpool and Manchester City both play it straighter this season.

Home, away or third: which should you actually buy?

A simple way to decide:

  • Buy the home shirt if you go to matches, if you want the version that will still be recognisable in twenty years, or if it is your first shirt for that club.
  • Buy the away shirt if you will wear it mostly in everyday settings. It is usually the more versatile garment.
  • Buy the third shirt if you already own the first two, or if you are buying as a collector. Third kits have the smallest production runs and hold value best.

Sizing: the mistake that causes most returns

Football shirt sizing is not standardised in any meaningful way. Three rules that will save you a return:

  • Ignore the letter, read the centimetres. Measure a shirt you already own flat on a table — chest width armpit to armpit, and length from collar seam to hem — and compare those two numbers to the size chart.
  • Asian-cut shirts run one to two sizes small. If you wear a European L, you may need XL or XXL.
  • Player versions run tighter than fan versions in the same nominal size. They are built to be worn skin-close for 90 minutes, not to be comfortable at a bar.

Buying safely

Official replicas now sit around €90–€110 and player versions push past €140, which is why the market for alternatives has grown so quickly — and why it attracts bad actors. Before you pay anywhere, check for a real returns address, tracked shipping, a size chart in centimetres, and payment through a recognised processor rather than a bank transfer.

Passe D ships worldwide with tracking, offers heat-pressed name and number customisation on every kit, and stocks shirts from €23.99.

FAQ

What colour is the Barcelona 2026/27 away kit?

Barcelona's standout alternate this season moves into a violet-purple palette, a clear departure from their recent away designs. Availability changes constantly — check current stock here.

Do away kits sell better than home kits?

Not usually across a full season, but individual away and third kits regularly outsell their home counterparts when the design is distinctive enough.

How long are 2026/27 kits available?

Home kits stay in production most of the season. Third and special-edition kits are made in far smaller runs and often sell out within weeks of release.

Are Serie A shirts smaller than Premier League shirts?

Generally yes, they are cut slimmer. Always check the centimetre measurements rather than assuming your usual size carries across leagues.

Can I get a name and number printed?

Yes, on every shirt. Ask for heat-pressed lettering rather than printed transfers — transfers start peeling after a few washes.
